DESIGN 121: Introduction to Human Values in Design

Needfinding for the Caltrain

Needfinding for the Caltrain

When tasked designing to elevate the Caltrain experience for riders, my team focused on Bay Area Sports Fans.

Our solution was Clipper Quiz, a trivia game where fans engage and earn rewards to elevate the game day ride!

Project Brief.

When prompted with the question: how might we use human-centered design to develop a product or service to improve the Caltrain experience, my group answered by following the design framework steps: needfinding, synthesizing & ideating, prototyping & testing, and iterating.

My Contributions.

I took a lead role in synthesizing our team’s information, ensuring clear storytelling and cohesive deliverables for class. I created videos that effectively communicated our project vision, process, and outcomes.

After talking to riders at the Palo Alto Caltrain station, decided to would focus on improving the Caltrain experience for sporting event goers.

Synthesizing + Ideating

After synthesizing observations from conversations and existing infrastructure, the major problems that surfaced concerned building connection and interaction between sports fans on game day commutes.

Game Day Jeopardy

A trivia game that would be played on the Caltrain while in transit to the game. Winners would be rewarded with "Clipper points" to encourage repeat usage of Caltrain.

Game Day Pass

Partnering with Clipper — a public transit partner of the Bay Area — to give sports fans an all-in-one ticket for public transportation they take getting to and from games.

Game Day Guide

Specified directions for how to get to different stadiums via public transportation would be displayed on existing screens inside the Caltrain.

Brought our prototypes to an in-class trade show and were able to get feedback from the teaching team.

Taking prototypes to the station for user feedback!

Iterating

Iterating

Iterating

Went to the Caltrain on a Sunday when there was a 49ers game to test iterated prototype. Used a Kahoot game to find out interest in the concept.

With user feedback on our existing prototypes, we found users wanted a sense of camaraderie amongst fellow sports fans. Knowing that fans love to show their knowledge of their favorite franchises, we came up with an on-train trivia game: Clipper Quiz!
